How It's Possible

Habitat is able to make housing affordable to low-income families because

• Houses are sold with a no-profit mortgage.
• Homebuyers receive an interest-free mortgage for 25 to 30 years.
• Individuals, businesses, faith and service organizations, and others provide generous financial support.
• Homeowners and volunteers build or repair homes under trained supervision. There is no charge for the labor that volunteers provide; approximately 3,000 hours for each home.
• Habitat affiliates have minimal overhead.  Typically 90 to 95% of all funds donated to Habitat affiliates are used for construction-related expenses.  The Rutland affiliate currently has no paid staff.
